Men's Tennis Tops Hawai'i

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The No. 66 San Diego State Men's Tennis team got back to its winning ways on Thursday, defeating Hawai'i, 5-2, at UH Tennis Complex.

The Aztecs No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Thorsten Bertsch and junior Hunter Nicholas got SDSU (5-3) off to a good start, defeating the Hawai'i duo of Jonathan Brookly and Dmytro Kovalyov, 8-6, to begin the day. The Aztecs No. 3 unit of sophomore Spencer Simon and junior Shiva Sangwan followed with a victory over Chas Okamoto and David Schuster, 8-5, to clinch the doubles point.

Senior Derek Siddiqui began singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brooklyn in the No. 1 slot, while sophomore Andranik Kachatryan and junior Juan Florez each battled back from losing their first set to earn three-set victories. Khachatryan defeated Nils Schuhmann, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Florez held off Danilo Casanova, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, to seize the Aztecs' fourth point and clinch the match victory. Nicholas added a singles win against Jared Spiker in the No. 3 spot, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), by winning a third-set tiebreaker.

SDSU resumes action in Hawaii on Saturday, as the Aztecs take on Pacific beginning at 10 a.m. HT.
