Aztecs Men's Tennis Defeat Toreros in Heated Match

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's tennis took down cross-town opponent, San Diego Tuesday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. In a face-off that was hard fought the Aztecs emerged victorious in the end, defeating the Toreros 4-3.
After a rain delay, doubles action got underway with Achim Ceban and Giovanni Vaglietti downing Dean Jackson and Chris Coetzee in first doubles, 8-6. To clinch the doubles point Juan Gomez and Bartosz Golas defeated Nicola Bubnic and Nils Schive, 8-4, in second doubles. Third doubles was the last to finish with Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert falling to Charl Wolmarans and Juan Devillier, 8-5.
With SDSU taking the doubles point and getting a 1-0 lead over San Diego, the match between Vaglietti and Bubnic was the first to finish with Vaglietti taking the decision, 6-4, 6-4, in fourth singles. In fifth singles Schulz van Endert was the next to take down his Torero opponent, 6-3, 6-2, in Schive. Sixth singles was the next match to finish with Feliz falling to Tom Wolff, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Gomez was the second Aztec to fall in singles action, 7-6, 6-3, to Coetzee in second singles. In the most heated match of the day Ceban picked up his second victory of the day, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, defeating Jackson for the second time on the day in first singles. The last match to finish was a hard battle between Golas and Wolmarans with Golas ultimately falling, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, in third singles.
"This year's match against San Diego was everything we expected it to be," said SDSU head coach Gene Carswell. "We fought hard and threw everything we had at them. This was a complete team effort."
The Aztecs will next face UC Irvine on Thursday at 2 p.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
