SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 57 San Diego State men's tennis team suffered a tough defeat on the road Thursday afternoon, falling to No. 74 Santa Clara, 6-1, to snap its three-match winning streak.

Santa Clara began the match by claiming the doubles point. San Diego State's No. 1 team of junior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) and senior Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) fell in a tight match to the Broncos' team of Llya Osintsev and John Lamble, 8-7 (5), before SDSU's No. 2 duo of sophomore Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) and freshman Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) topped SCU's team of Ashot Khacharyan and Sam Bertram, 8-3, to even it up at 1-1.

However, the Aztecs' No. 3 unit of freshmen Jonas Meinzer (Buggingen, Germany) and Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Germany) couldn't hold off Santa Clara's team of Mikheil Khmiadashvili and Jesse Ross, as the Broncos won the deciding match, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point.

San Diego State wasn't able to fare much better in singles play, as the Aztecs fell in five out of six singles matches. Bertsch dropped his match to Lamble in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, in the No. 1 slot, while Osintsev also outlasted Nicholas in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, in No. 2 singles.

No. 124-ranked Gelbrich lost his match in No. 3 singles to Khacharyan, 6-2, 6-3, while Jebens, the reigning Mountain West Player of the Week, fell to Khmiadashvili, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 4 singles play.

SDSU freshman Maxi Boewer-Stelter (Berlin, Germany) picked up the Aztecs' lone singles victory in the No. 5 spot on Thursday, knocking off Ross in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, but Bertram topped Ianakiev, 7-6, 6-1, in the No. 6 slot.

San Diego State continues its road trip through Northern California on Saturday, as the Aztecs take on Pacific beginning at 2 p.m. PT.
