Aztecs in Action at Pacific Coast Championships
Doubles pair Javier Pulgar and Tim Schulz van Endert got the tournament underway for the Aztecs on Thursday, knocking off the Indiana duo of Jim Kellogg and Robert Simmons in consecutive sets, 6-2, 6-1.
The Aztecs would carry the momentum into Friday, starting it off on a positive note as Juan Florez and Andre Feliz easily advanced to the second round with a victory over Indiana's Bradley Adams and Michel Marcoux in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
SDSU's strong start took a turn for the worse, however, when the duo of Shiva Sangwan and Matthew Tosches was defeated by UCSD's Erik Elliott and Austin West. Their loss would set off a chain reaction, as the Aztecs would see their remaining two pairings be eliminated in second round play.
Pulgar and Schulz van Endert pushed Pepperdine's Hugh Clarke and Finn Tearney to the limits and forced tiebreakers in their first two sets, but were unable to capitalize on a second set victory as they fell, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 6-4. Florez and Feliz would also meet their match in the second round, falling to Stanford's Alexander Clayton and Ted Kelly in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
The pairing of Sangwan and Tosches are scheduled to play in a consolation match later Friday evening.
