SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Penn, 5-2, in its second of three-straight home matches at Aztec Tennis Center.

SDSU (7-5, 3-0 MW) began the day by winning the doubles point, as all three teams earned victories to sweep doubles play. Sophomore Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) and freshman Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) extended their unbeaten streak to seven-consecutive matches in the No. 2 slot, topping Nikola Kocovic and Matt Nardella, 8-0, to begin doubles action.

With the lineups shuffled around a bit, junior Andranik Khachatryan (Burbank, Calif.) and senior Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) teamed up for the first time this season to defeat Zach Katz and Marshall Sharp, 8-2, in the No. 1 slot, while junior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) and freshman Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Germany) also played together for the first time this season and completed the sweep with a close win over Austin Kaplan and Thomas Spratt, 8-7 (3), in No. 3 doubles.

Jebens dropped his match to Nardella, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 4 slot to begin singles play, but Gelbrich followed with his second-straight victory, topping Jeremy Court, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 3 spot. Bertsch took down Kocovic, 6-1, 7-6 (3), in No. 1 singles, while Ianakiev earned a three-set decision over Sharp, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1, in the No. 5 slot to seal the dual-match victory.

With the match already decided, freshman Maxi Boewer-Stelter (Berlin, Germany) knocked off Katz, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 6 singles, and Nicholas lost a hard-fought three-set match to Vim De Alwis, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9, in the No. 2 spot.

San Diego State returns to action on Thursday, March 13, as it plays host to No. 10 Duke, beginning at 2 p.m. PT at Aztec Tennis Center.
