M. Tennis Earns Victory over No. 73 Denver, 4-2

San Diego - San Diego State men's tennis freshman Jonas Meinzer (Buggingen, Germany) earned his first-career dual match singles victory on Saturday afternoon, lifting the Aztecs over No. 73 Denver, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon in the Mission Valley Hilton Spring Invitational at San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.
SDSU (8-8, 3-0 MW) rallied in doubles play to win the point to begin the match. After the Aztecs' No. 3 team of junior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) and Meinzer fell to Eric Marbach and Yannik James, 8-6, San Diego State's No. 1 duo of senior Hunter Nicholas and junior Andranik Khachatryan topped Henry Craig and Alex Gasson, 8-5, to knot it 1-1.
The Aztecs went on to earn the doubles point when the No. 2 unit of sophomore Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) and freshman Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) knocked off Diogo Rocha and Fabio Biasion, 8-5.
Singles play began with freshman Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Germany) topping Alex Clinkenbeard, 6-2, 6-1, on the No. 4 court, while Nicholas put SDSU one point away from the dual match win by defeating Rocha, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 2 singles.
Bertsch dropped his match in No. 1 singles to Craig, 6-3, 6-2, and senior Juan Florez (Bogota, Colombia) fell short against Biasion, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 5 slot. However, Meinzer put an end to the Pioneers' comeback hopes with his victory over Aidan Talcott, 7-6 (2), 7-5.
San Diego State returns to the court on Tuesday, March 25, as it heads north to face No. 4 USC, beginning at 2 p.m. PT.
