SDSU Men's Tennis Falls To USD, 5-2
March 25, 2006
SAN DIEGO - The 72nd-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team saw its modest two-match winning streak come to a screeching halt on Saturday afternoon, suffering a 5-2 defeat to No. 36 San Diego in a clash between cross-town rivals at USD's West Courts. With the loss, the Aztecs saw their record slip to 6-6, while the Toreros improve to 10-5 on the season.
SDSU stumbled out of the gates in doubles action when the No. 1 team of Benedikt Stronk and Billy Timu dropped an 8-5 decision to USD's Pierrick Ysern and Thomas Liversage. The Aztecs responded with an 8-5 victory of their own as the tandem of Christian Groh and Eugenio Romero disposed of Chris Coetzee and Oscar Plotnik at the No. 3 spot. In the deciding match, the No. 2 pairing of Markus Dickhardt and Stephan Timu were locked in an epic struggle with USD's Mirza Koristovic and Jonas Mouly. Leading 8-7, the SDSU duo reached break point on one occasion, but could not close the deal, losing in a heartbreaker 9-8 (5).
The Aztecs fell behind 2-0 at the start of singles play after Stephan Timu was roughed up at the No. 4 position by the Toreros' Thomas Liversage, 6-1, 6-1. SDSU, however, got on the board when Christian Groh extended his winning streak to three, dispatching Mirza Koristovic, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot.
Trailing 2-1, the Aztecs could not generate any momentum the rest of the way until the outcome had already been decided. At the No. 2 position, Benedikt Stronk was dealt a 6-3, 6-3 defeat by Oscar Plotnik, while the fatal blow was delivered on the No. 1 court as Markus Dickhardt succumbed to Pierrick Ysern, 6-1, 7-6 (5), in a battle of nationally ranked players.
SDSU was able to salvage one last point when Robert Sabo (No. 6) won his third match in a row with a three-set victory over Jonas Mouly, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
The Aztecs return to action Tuesday afternoon when Harvard invades Aztec Tennis Center on March 28. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
