SAN DIEGO -- The 34th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team opened Mountain West Conference play with a 5-2 victory over 75th-ranked Air Force on Friday at the SDSU Courts.
The Aztecs played without Ryan Redondo, the number two singles player and one-half of the nation's top-ranked doubles team and also survived a loss at number one singles by 32nd-ranked Oliver Maiberger to claim their fifth straight victory.
Despite playing without Maiberger and Redondo at number one doubles, the Aztecs still earned the double point by getting wins at number two and three doubles. Gabe Coren and Felix Hardt posted an 8-6 victory at number two doubles and Michael Coehlo and Maiberger combined for an 8-0 win at number three doubles.
The Aztecs won four of six singles singles matches - all in straight sets. Hardt, 106th-ranked Daniel Jung, Armando Carrascosa and Coren all posted victories in singles for San Diego State.
The Aztecs (9-8 overall and 1-0 Mountain West Conference) are back in action tomorrow against New Mexico. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m. at the SDSU Courts.
