SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Juan Gomez rallied from one set down and a break down in the second set for a dramatic three-set victory to lift the San Diego State men's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over TCU on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center.

The Aztecs scored the first three points of the match, but needed Gomez' 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 win at number two singles to break a three-all deadlock and propel San Diego State to its third victory in its last four matches.

"This was a great team victory," SDSU head coach Gene Carswell said. "It was great to watch this team come together as a unit. This is the best job of that we have done this year. Today our hero was Juan. He fought through adversity, battling back in the second set, and closing the match in the third set."

San Diego State claimed the singles point with victories at both the number two and three positions. It marked the eighth time in the 12 dual matches that the doubles point has been contested, that San Diego State earned the point. The Aztecs' Juan Gomez and Luis Rattenhuber, ranked 76th nationally, claimed an 8-3 victory at number two doubles and Andre Felix and Tim Shulz van Endert were victorious at number three, 8-4.

The Aztecs won two of the six first sets in singles and quickly made the team score 3-0. Achim Vladimirschii lost just six games in posting a 6-2, 6-4 win at number one singles and minutes later Andre Felix recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory at number five singles.

The Horned Frogs battled back, claiming the next three singles matches. Slah Mbarek defeated Giovanni Vaglietti at number three singles. TCU won a couple of hard-fought matches to tie the score at three. Marius Cirstea won at number six singles, with a 7-6 (8), 6-4 decision over Jakub Kowalski and Christopher Price worked past Rattenhubber, 6-4, 7-5, at number four singles.

That set the stage for the only three-set match of the day. After rallying to win the second set, Gomez ended the drama early in the third set by winning the first four games en route to a 6-1 decision. With the win, Gomez won his team-high 10th dual match of the 2010 season and improved to 4-0 in three-set matches.

San Diego State improved to 5-11 on the season and 1-0 in Mountain West Conference play. TCU, which won at UNLV 4-3 on Friday, fell to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in MWC action.

San Diego State is back in action Wednesday, when the Aztecs travel across town to face 61st-ranked San Diego. SDSU returns to the Aztec Tennis Center for a pair of matches next Friday, entertaining UC Riverside at 10 a.m. PT and Air Force at 3 p.m. PT.
