Aztecs Win MWC Regular Season Title With Victory Over BYU
April 7, 2007
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the third consecutive season and seventh time in the Mountain West Conference's eight years of existence, the San Diego State men's tennis team won the regular season championship. The Aztecs accomplished the feat by rallying from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Brigham Young, 4-3, at the Air Force Academy Saturday afternoon.
SDSU got off to a rocky start by going down in all three doubles matches to open its MWC regular-season finale. Juan Gomez and Anthony Gomez suffered an 8-5 loss to Cassidy Mears and Cale Planck at No. 3 to get things going and the Cougars clinched the doubles point with their 8-4 win at No. 2 over Achim Ceban and Billy Timu. BYU completed the sweep with James Ludlow and Dominik Kaufhold's 8-5 decision over 14th-ranked Markus Dickhardt and Christian Groh at the top of the lineup.
In singles, it was not much easier for the Aztecs as the Cougars took a 2-0 advantage when Groh lost the first set 6-2 and retired in his match against Ludlow. However, SDSU responded with a victory at No. 1 when 30th-ranked Dickhardt downed Chip Hand, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, to cut into BYU's lead. Like San Diego State, Brigham Young bounced back with Jonathan Sanchez's straight sets triumph over Juan Gomez at No. 5, giving the Cougars a commanding 3-1 lead.
As the contest progressed, Ceban, who lost his first set, 4-6, fought back in the next two frames to post a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 decision over Mears at No. 4 to bring SDSU to within one point of tying the match.
The tying point ultimately came from Anthony Gomez, who recorded a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Kaufhold at No. 3, with the deciding match still in progress at No. 6.
At the bottom of the lineup, Robert Sabo cruised to a 6-3 first-set win, but BYU's Planck returned the favor with a 6-1 victory immediately after. In the third and final frame, Sabo was able to break Planck's serve en route to a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 decision, giving San Diego State its third straight regular season title.
The win improves SDSU's record to 15-6 overall and 6-0 in the MWC, while extending its season-long winning streak to 10 matches. The Aztecs will look to continue its winning ways April 10, when they travel to Los Angeles for a showdown with UCLA. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. PDT at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
