SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team recorded a mammoth upset in doubles competition to go along with two victories in singles play, but it wasn't enough as the 56th-ranked Aztecs fell to No. 2 Pepperdine on Saturday, 5-2, in front of a packed audience at Aztec Tennis Center. With the defeat, SDSU (10-7) saw its four-match winning streak snapped, while the Waves (25-1) won their won their 12th match in a row.

The Aztecs started the match off on a high note when the 21st-ranked duo of Benedikt Stronk and Markus Dickhardt registered another upset in doubles play, overpowering the top-ranked tandem of Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann, 8-3. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Pepperdine's pairing of Richard Johnson and Omar Altmann knotted things up with an 8-3 victory of their own over Christian Groh and Eugenio Romero. In the deciding contest, the Aztec combo of Stephan Timu and Anthony Gomez fought valiantly, but the Waves' 54th-ranked twosome of Pedro Rico and Ivor Lovrak escaped with an 8-6 decision to give the visitors the crucial doubles point.

Pepperdine seized control in singles action, taking the first four matches to secure the team victory. On the No. 1 court, Stronk fell to sixth-ranked Doerner, 6-1, 6-1, while at the No. 4 position, Timu absorbed a 6-2, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Begemann. Dickhardt gave SDSU a glimmer of hope when he took the first set from Lovrak on the third court, but the Aztec junior ultimately succumbed, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The scarlet and black salvaged a pair of wins at the end of the day as Gomez outlasted Johnson, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7, in a super tie-breaker at the No. 5 position, while Groh continued his stellar play of late, upsetting No. 25 Rico on court two in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to extend his winning streak to eight matches.

SDSU will look to regroup on Sunday when it squares off against UC Santa Barbara at Aztec Tennis Center in its final home match of the regular season, beginning at 1 p.m.
