USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The No. 1-seeded San Diego State Men's Tennis team lost in the Mountain West Conference semifinals to No. 4 New Mexico, 4-2, on Saturday at USAF Academy, Colo. It's the second-consecutive season SDSU lost to New Mexico in the semis.
The Aztecs (18-8) had to bounce back early after losing the doubles point to being the match. Sophomore Thorsten Bertsch and junior Hunter Nicholas lost to New Mexico's duo of Conor Berg and Andrew Van Der Vyver, 8-4, in the No. 1 slot, but SDSU's No. 2 team of senior Derek Siddiqui and Andranik Khachatryan topped James Hignett and Mads Hegelund, 8-5, to even it up. However, the Aztecs' No. 3 unit of junior Juan Florez and freshman Marvin Tawasi fell short in a tight match to Jadon Phillips and Simon Hegelund, 9-8, as New Mexico earned the doubles point.
SDSU fell behind further to begin singles play, as Khachatryan lost to Van Der Vyver, 6-1, 6-2. Tawasi earned a victory over Mitch McDaniels, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 4 slot, and Nicholas topped Samir Iftikhar, 7-6, 6-4, in No. 3 singles to knot the score, 2-2.
But Bertsch was knocked off by Berg, 7-5, 6-4, in No. 2 singles play, and Siddiqui dropped a tough three-set match to Phillips, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, to seal the match victory, as New Mexico advanced to Sunday's MW championship match.
