LAS VEGAS -  The San Diego State men's tennis team, seeded second in the league championship and ranked 55th nationally, advanced to the semifinal round of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship, with a 4-0 victory over seventh-seeded Air Force in the first quarterfinal round match Wednesday. The Aztecs will face the winner of the New Mexico-UNLV match, played later today, in Friday's semifinal round.

San Diego State, which won for the eighth time in its last nine outings and extended its conference record streak of reaching the semifinals to 11, was pushed but controlled the match throughout, improving its overall record to .500 for the first time this season (12-12). Air Force is now 10-13 overall.

The Aztecs opened the match by claiming the doubles point. Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert cruised to an 8-1 victory at number three doubles. Feliz and Schulz van Endert improved to 14-5 in doubles play during the dual season. It also marked the eighth consecutive match in which the Aztecs have won at the number three doubles position. The Aztecs nationally-ranked duo of Giovanni Vaglietti and Achim Vladimirschii clinched the point with an 8-2 win at number one doubles.

Vladimirschii, a senior from Moscow, earned the Aztecs' second point, defeating Austin Francis, 6-2, 6-0 at number two singles. Vladimirschii improved to 9-3 on the season and ran his singles winning streak to three matches.

San Diego State built a 3-0 advantage, when Feliz, a junior from San Gabriel, Calif., rallied from a set down to defeat Stephen Katrein at number six singles, 0-6, 6-1, 6-2. Feliz, who dropped just three games after the first set, remained perfect at six singles this season (3-0) and snapped a four-match drought at the position for the Aztecs, giving SDSU its first victory at number six since April 9.

The Aztecs punched their ticket to the semifinal round and put a halt to the remaining singles matches when Schulz van Endert closed out Alex Beaussart, 6-2, 6-3, at number five singles. The junior from Berlin, improved to 5-2 at number five singles this season and won his fourth consecutive match overall.

San Diego State will face the winner of the New Mexico/UNLV match, scheduled for 2 p.m. PT today, in the semifinal round on Friday. The Aztecs defeated both opponents earlier this season, claiming a 4-3 decision over New Mexico, on April 11 at the Aztec Tennis Center, and knocking off UNLV, 4-3, in the regular-season finale last Saturday on the SDSU campus. Match time for Friday's encounter is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT.
