Nicholas, Bertsch Start Strong in Tourney

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The San Diego State men's tennis team went unscathed in both doubles and singles play in the first day of play at the Battle on the Bay Classic in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday.

The Aztecs doubles team of senior Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) and junior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) topped Cal Poly's team of Ben Donovan and Matt Thompson, 8-4, in first-round action. SDSU's duo resumes play in the second-round on Saturday.

In singles play, No. 114 Bertsch knocked off Thompson of Cal Poly in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile, Nicholas defeated Pepperdine's Stefan Menichella, 6-1, 6-2. Both advance to quarterfinal play of their respective brackets on Saturday.
