Aztec Junior Leads SDSU at ITA Regionals

IRVINE, Calif. - San Diego State's Jose Sierra Short advanced in both singles and doubles action at the ITA Southwest Regional on Friday, becoming one of only two Aztecs to remain alive going into tomorrow's round of 16's.
Sierra-Short teamed up with Javier Pulgar to form an eight-seeded double's team that will lead the Aztec's into tomorrow's third round. The pair had a bye in the first round before posting an 8-4 victory over UC Irvine's Eric Gast and Ryan Mayer in the second round. Pulgar and Sierra-Short will face ninth-seeded Hugh Clarke and Mousheg Hovhannisyan of Pepperdine at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
In singles play, San Diego State advanced three individuals to the third round following Thursday's opening rounds. Unfortunately, all three Aztecs that advanced to the round of 32 were eliminated on Friday by seeded players. One of SDSU's seeded singles player, 17th-seed Javier Pulgar won 13 games, but lost to 16th-seed Alex Liompart of Pepperdine, 7-6, 6-5. The other seeded Aztec, 17th-seed Andre Felix lost to the field's top-seed Daniel Nguyen of USC, 6-2, 6-1. Fourth-seeded Sabastien Fanselow of Pepperdine knocked out Hunter Nicholas of San Diego State, 6-0, 6-1.
In the consolation bracket, Jose Sierra Short advanced to the round of 16, rallying from one-set down to defeat UCSB's Alex Konigsfeldt.
Play continues tomorrow at the ITA Regional, with both singles and doubles matches scheduled.
