SDSU Men's Tennis Faces Off Against UCLA On Thursday
Feb. 8, 2012
SAN DIEGO - The No. 63 San Diego State men's tennis team is set to take on No. 8 UCLA on Thursday in its second consecutive road match of the 2012 dual-match season. The non-conference tilt is set for a 2 p.m. PT start at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Aztecs (3-0) are coming off a week where they defeated then-No. 47 UC Irvine and moved up 11 spots to No. 63 in the most recent ITA Team Rankings. SDSU knocked off UCI behind great team play and a stellar performance from Mountain West Co-Men's Tennis Player of the Week Derek Siddiqui.
The junior from Long Beach, Calif., earned the match-clinching point for the Aztecs as he rallied to defeat Sam Gould, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6). The 4-3 victory marked SDSU's second win against a ranked opponent this season as the team picked up a 5-2 decison against then-No. 47 Cal Poly on Jan. 22.
The Bruins, meanwhile, are 6-0 after coming off a weekend sweep of No. 13 Cal and No. 6 Stanford. UCLA downed the Golden Bears, 4-3, on Friday and then dispatched the Cardinal, 6-1, on Saturday.
San Diego State is looking to avenge a 5-2 loss to UCLA in a match contested at Los Angeles Tennis Center in Feb. 2010. SDSU won the doubles point, but struggled in singles and dropped the match.
After the trip to Los Angeles, the Aztecs will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., on Feb. 11 for a neutral site-match against Oklahoma State (2-0) at 2 p.m. PT.
