Feb. 15, 2012
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State freshman Thorsten Bertsch has been named the Mountain West Co-Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon. This marks the first time Bertsch has received the award and the third time an Aztec has been honored this season.
Bertsch went a combined 3-1 last week vs. No. 8 UCLA and Oklahoma State. In Thursday's match against the Bruins, Bertsch and teammate Derek Siddiqui notched an 8-7 (5) victory over the tandem of Alex Brigham and Marcos Giron at the No. 2 doubles position.
The native of Mannheim, Germany returned to the court on Saturday and recorded two wins in San Diego State's 5-2 victory against the Cowboys. After pairing with Siddiqui to defeat Brandon Champagne and Adolfo Aires, 8-0, Bertsch went on to upset No. 77 Chris Haworth, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles spot.
Bertsch, who shared the weekly award with TCU's Nick Chappell, will return to action with SDSU on Saturday, Feb. 18, as the team plays host to San Francisco. The non-conference tilt is set for a 10 a.m. PT start at Aztec Tennis Center.
