Nicholas Named MW Player of the Week
Feb. 20, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) has been named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. Nicholas joins senior Derek Siddiqui as the second Aztec to win the award this season, as No. 70 SDSU is the only school with two men's players honored this year.
Nicholas went a combined 3-1 last week as the Aztecs defeated Hawai'i, 5-2, on Feb. 14, and Pacific, 4-3, on Feb. 16. Playing at No. 3 singles against Hawai'i's Jared Spiker, Nicholas lost the first set, 4-6, but rallied to win the next two sets 6-4 and 7-6 (8-6) to win the match. In No. 1 doubles play, Nicholas and partner Thorsten Bertsch turned back Hawai'i's Jonathan Brooklyn and Dmytro Kovalyov, 8-6.
Against Ben Mirkin of Pacific, Nicholas again dropped the opening set (2-6), but rallied to take the second set, 7-5, and the third and decisive set, 6-0. His win secured the Aztecs' 4-3 victory. Nicholas is 6-2 in singles play this dual season, and has won three-consecutive matches.
The Aztecs (6-3, 1-0 MW) return to action this Saturday, Feb. 23, against MW foe Boise State, beginning at noon PT. The match was originally scheduled for Sunday, but has since been changed.
