The Home Opener
The 39th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team will play its sixth-consecutive match against a top-10 team on Friday when the Aztecs travel to Malibu to battle 10th-ranked Pepperdine. The following day the Aztecs will entertain 75th-ranked UC Irvine in the home opener at the SDSU Courts. Saturday's match against the Anteaters is scheduled to begin at noon.
The Aztecs fell to 3-4 on the season following a 5-2 loss at fifth-ranked UCLA on Tuesday. The loss marked the first time San Diego State fell below .500 this season, despite playing all seven matches against nationally-ranked opponents and five games against top-10 teams. Despite the loss, San Diego State moved up two positions in this
week's ITA national rankings from 40th to 38th.
Climbing The Rankings
With a national ranking of 38th, San Diego State has its highest national ranking of the season. The Aztecs are one of just five teams with a losing record in the top 45. The others are 15th-ranked Duke (1-5), 20th-ranked SMU (3-4), 22nd-ranked Indiana State (3-4) and 35th- ranked Miami (Fla.) (1-2). The national ranking is a tribute to the Aztecs' difficult schedule. San Diego State has not lost to a team ranked below fifth at match time. SDSU is 0-4 vs. top-five teams and 3-0 vs. teams ranked below fifth this season.
San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, who claimed the ITA national indoor doubles title last fall, were rewarded with a number two preseason ranking in the ITA poll. The duo, which entered fall play ranked 46th, made the biggest jump in the rankings. Maiberger's solid singles play in the fall resulted in a boost in his individual rankings as well. The junior moved from 13th in the fall to 11th in the preseason spring rankings. The ITA will release updated singles and doubles rankings on Friday.
