Aztecs Drop 5-2 Decision to No. 34 Rice
Feb. 28, 2011
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team was unable to snap a six-match losing streak as No. 34 Rice defeated the No. 54 Aztecs, 5-2, on Monday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. Despite the loss, SDSU saw great individual performances in two of its singles matches.
Facing No. 90 Harry Fowler, Javier Pulgar pulled off a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory in a tight contest at number one. Then at number four, Tim Schulz van Endert defeated Philipp Seifert, 6-1, 6-2 to give the Aztecs their second win in singles play.
"I was proud of Tim and Javier, it was nice to see those guys come out and win matches the way they did," head coach Gene Carswell said. "I felt like this is a little bit of a breakthrough for Javier, that was a good opponent across the net there. Whenever you're winning matches at No. 1 against a nationally-ranked opponent, that's a quality win."
SDSU couldn't find the same success in doubles, failing to get the point. However, the Aztecs did get one victory as Giovanni Vaglietti and Hunter Nicholas defeated Peter Frank and Michael Nuesslein 8-7 (3) to get the win at number one. With the victory against SDSU, Rice improved to 9-3 on the season, while the Aztecs dropped to 1-8.
Next up for San Diego State will be a trip to La Jolla, Calif. for Pacific Coast Doubles. SDSU will compete all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday and then return home to face Oklahoma at 11 a.m. on Sunday March 13 at the Aztec Tennis Center.
