Dickhardt Earns Second Straight MWC Player of the Week Award
March 28, 2007
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior Markus Dickhardt has been named Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week the league office announced Wednesday. The weekly award marks the second straight for the Aztecs' top singles and doubles player and the fifth of his career.
Dickhardt, after being recognized last week, made a strong case for the award this week after posting a perfect 4-0 record at No. 1 singles, beating a pair of nationally ranked players, and going 2-2 at No. 1 doubles while teaming with Christian Groh, in helping SDSU go 4-0 during the week.
As the nation's 52nd-ranked singles player, Dickhardt extended his personal-best winning streak to 11 matches by beating Yale's Brandon Wai (6-2, 6-2) and Princeton's Peter Capkovic (3-6, 6-4, 1-0(8)) before dispatching No. 60 Andreas Weber of Hawai'i (6-4, 6-2) and 20th-ranked Pierre Mouillon of California (6-1, 6-7, 6-0) in Honolulu last weekend. The win over Mouillon represented the highest ranked player the Marburg, Germany, native had defeated this season and was Dickhardt's fourth victory over a nationally ranked opponent in five attempts this spring.
In doubles, the then 12th-ranked duo of Dickhardt-Groh teamed for the first time since San Diego State's season-opening doubleheader on Jan. 20 and posted an 8-6 victory over Yale's Wai and Rory Green. Later in the week, the two guided the Aztecs to their first-ever win over California as they defeated the Golden Bears' Tyler Browne and John Pettit, 8-5.
For the season, Dickhardt is 13-2 in the singles, including a 4-1 mark against nationally ranked players and is 9-1 at the top of the singles ladder. In doubles, Dickhardt and Groh are ranked No. 17 in the country and sport a 4-2 record with all decisions coming at the top of the order.
With his third award of 2007, Dickhardt becomes the first Aztec since Oliver Maiberger in 2003 to be honored three times in one season. That year, the former All-American was honored on four different occasions. In MWC history, the senior is just the third Aztec to be named player of the week at least three times in one campaign joining Maiberger, who did it twice (2003 and 2001), and Alex Waske (2000).
No. 52 San Diego State opens MWC play beginning Friday, March 30, as it plays host to UNLV at 10 a.m. PDT. Following their match with the Rebels, the Aztecs will welcome No. 47 New Mexico and No. 74 TCU to Aztec Tennis Center on March 31 and April 1, respectively. First serve vs. the Lobos is set for 2 p.m., while the Aztecs-Horned Frogs contest is scheduled for 11 a.m.
