March 30, 2005
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior Armando Carrascosa has been named Mountain West Conference men's tennis player of the week. The weekly award is the first career honor for Carrascosa and is the third such accolade the program has received this season.
Carrascosa, the 93rd-ranked singles player in the nation, defeated Harvard's Brandon Chiu in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 yesterday in Santa Barbara, Calif. His win clinched the match for the Aztecs as they went on to record the 5-2 upset of the 23rd-ranked Crimson.
In doubles action, the Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico native teamed with junior Benedikt Stronk at No. 1 and downed the Harvard team of Johnathan Chu and Chiu, 8-6. The win marked their fifth consecutive at the top position and improved their record to 5-0 on the season.
Earlier this year, Stronk earned the first weekly award of the season on Jan. 26 and again on March 9.
San Diego State will host No. 57 Utah in a conference match at 11 a.m. Friday.
