Aztec's Maiberger Advances to Semifinal Round

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Oliver Maiberger advanced to the semifinal round of the singles draw at the 2001 Omni Hotels Western Regional Men's Tennis Championships in Las Vegas on Thursday.
The tournament features more than 140 players from 16 teams in the western region.
Maiberger, the tournament's top-seeded player, lost only eight games in four sets of tennis on Friday, disposing of Adrian Venturi of Northern Arizona, 6-1, 6-1 in the third round and defeating Bart Scott of New Mexico, 6-4, 6-2 in round four.
Maiberger teamed with fellow sophomore Ryan Redondo to advance into the round of 16 in doubles play, with an 8-4 win over a team from New Mexico State. Maiberger and Redondo are seeded second in the tournament.
Two other Aztec players suffered losses in the third round of singles play. Redondo took the opening set from fourth-seeded Guillaume Bovier of Boise State before losing in a third-set tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Ninth-seeded David Kowalski eliminated the Aztecs Gabe Coren from the main field with a, 6-4, 6-1 victory.
The second day of the tournament was also tough on two Aztec doubles teams. The San Diego State duo of Coren and Travis Hasson lost to the fifth-seeded team of Mercier and Yip of Utah, 8-5, and Khalid Naffa and Michael Coelho fell to Carlsson and Paulson, 8-5.
