Men's Tennis to Wrap Up Fall Slate at LMU Invitational
Nov. 9, 2017
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State men's tennis team will put the finishing touches on its fall tournament schedule this weekend when it travels up the freeway for the inaugural LMU Invitational, Nov. 10-12, in Los Angeles, California.
The three-day round-robin tournament will consist of six flights of singles and three flights of doubles featuring the Aztecs, Loyola Marymount, Nevada and Pepperdine at LMU Tennis Center.
A trio of SDSU newcomers have posted five singles victories this fall, including sophomore Arnaud Restifo (Nice, France) along with freshmen Ignacio Martinez (Weston, Fla.) and Jan Kirchhoff (Germany). Restifo, a transfer from Oklahoma, reached the finals at the Easley Memorial Classic last weekend in Las Vegas.
Rafael Gonzalez Almazan (Madrid, Spain) has impressed as well, capturing the Flight 2 singles crown at the Aztec Fall Invitational in early October. The SDSU sophomore also joined forces with junior Raul de la Torre (Calexico, Calif.) to claim the Flight 2 doubles title at the same event.
In addition, the Aztec tandem of junior Sander Gjoels-Andersen (Klampenborg, Denmark) and sophomore Nicholas Mitchell (Ojai, Calif.) has collected four wins, including an appearance in the Flight 1 doubles final at SDSU's aforementioned home tournament last month.
Following this weekend's event, San Diego State will have the next two-and-half months off from competition before opening their 2018 dual-match schedule on Saturday, Jan. 27 with a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount and Brigham Young at Aztec Tennis Center.
