Box Score

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Despite committing 22 turnovers, Wyoming handed the San Diego State women's basketball team a 60-43 defeat Wednesday at Arena Auditorium. With the loss, the Aztecs dropped to 9-16 overall and 3-10 in conference play, while the Cowgirls improved to 17-9 overall and 7-6 in league action, claiming their fifth straight victory over SDSU.

Aztec senior Jamey Cox (Waterloo, Iowa) had a team-best 13 points, while freshman Ashlee Dunlap (Los Angeles, Calif.) was just one behind with 12 points. Junior Nicolette McCartny (Chicago, Ill.) tagged on an additional six points before fouling out. Dunlap had a team-high seven rebounds, while Cox recorded three steals.

The first half began much the same as the first meeting between the two schools earlier this season with three ties, three lead changes and the two sides combining for five three-pointers in the first 12 minutes.

After two straight SDSU buckets which gave the Aztecs a 14-13 lead, Wyoming came back with a 10-0 run to go up by nine points at 23-14, before a lay-up by Tynisha King (Moreno Valley, Calif.) broke the string.

Cowgirl Carrie Bacon matched King's basket and then tacked on four more points to increase the Wyoming advantage to 29-16. A pair of free throws, the Aztecs' only trip to the line in the first half, cut into the deficit, but they still trailed by 13 points, 31-18, at the half.

San Diego State got the Cowgirl lead down to single-digits at 31-22 and then put together a mini-run of its own, scoring six straight points to close to seven following lay-ups by Dunlap and Cox and a jumper from senior Ashonda Williams (Crockett, Calif.).

Just as the Aztecs got within striking distance, Wyoming matched its biggest lead of the game at 13 points twice. SDSU came back to cut the deficit to eight at 46-38, but the Cowgirls then went up by 15 at 53-38 and never looked back, winning 60-43.

Bacon finished the game with 24 points, including an 11-for-11 mark from the free throw line. Wyoming guard Ashley Elliot posted 10 rebounds and Brenda Pickup was the only other Cowgirl in double-figure scoring with 14 points. Wyoming finished the game with a 29 to 10 advantage in free throw attempts and a 48-27 edge on the boards.

The Aztecs conclude their regular season schedule with another road game at Colorado State Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. MST at Moby Arena. SDSU, which has already earned the No. 7 seed, will find out who it will face at next week MWC tournament, March 12-15, in Las Vegas, Nev., at approximately 4:15 p.m. PST on Saturday.
