SDSU Women's Hoops Ends Regular Season With 69-61 Loss to BYU

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team ended its regular season Saturday by falling to visiting Brigham Young 69-61 at Cox Arena. With the loss, the Aztecs dropped to 8-19 overall and 2-12 in Mountain West Conference play, while the Cougars improved to 18-9 overall and 9-5 in league action.
Senior Lindsey Casey (Odessa, Texas) made her final career home game a special one, as she scored a career-high and game-high 19 points. She finished 9-of-15 from the floor and added five rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
Junior Michelle Strawberry (Corona, Calif.) had 15 points, with three baskets coming from behind the three-point arc for the second consecutive game. Freshman Ashley Cheesman (Orem, Utah) tallied nine points and team-high six rebounds. Junior Veronica Shaw (Phoenix, Ariz.) contributed eight points, seven assists and three steals for the Aztecs.
SDSU, which was 24-of-56 (42.9 percent) from the floor, shot over 40 percent for the third consecutive outing and the seventh straight half. BYU, however, recorded a blistering 65.5 percent field-goal percentage in the second half and 58 percent for the game.
The Aztecs fell behind by eight points late in the first half before going on an 11-3 run over the final 5:48 to tie the game at halftime, 25-25, on a free-throw by freshman Kate Eveland (Southlake, Texas).
BYU took control in the second half and led by as many as 15 on a lay-up by Tiari Goold with 5:10 remaining in the game. The Aztecs closed to within seven with 1:48 left on a fastbreak lay-up by Casey, but were unable to close the gap, falling 69-61.
The No. 8 seed San Diego State Aztecs face the No. 1 seed New Mexico Lobos Wednesday at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo., in the Mountain West Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
