SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team kicked-off its 2005-06 season and the second Beth Burns era with a 65-60 exhibition loss Tuesday against Team Concept, a squad of former college players, at Cox Arena.

"We had some opportunities down the stretch and didn't make great decisions, but we'll learn from them and be back on Saturday," said Burns, who is in her second stint as head coach of the Aztecs.

SDSU senior guard Veronica Shaw (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded a team-high 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while newcomer Jana Heinrich (Fischbach, Germany) added 15 points and six boards. Freshman Tamika Lipford (Oceanside, Calif.) and sophomore Shanna Demus (Palmdale, Calif.) tied for the team lead in assists with four apiece.

San Diego State led by as many as nine points in the first half at 25-16 and 27-18, but Team Concept outscored the Aztecs 11-2 in the final 3:47 heading into the locker room to knot the game at 29-29.

Team Concept took its second lead of the game on the first bucket of the second half, as the two squads battled back and forth in the first six minutes. The Aztecs reclaimed the lead at 40-39 on a lay-up by sophomore Erin Jackson (Sparks, Nev.), but Team Concept bounced back nine seconds later with a lay-up of its own by Shannon Donnelly.

SDSU trailed by as many as six points at the 9:06 mark, but cut the deficit to a single point five times and took what would turn out to be its final lead of the game at 57-55 on a pair of free throws by Desiree Johnson (Kahuku, Hawaii.).

The game hung in the balance with just under two minutes remaining and the scored tied at 60, but Team Concept scored the final five points on a jumper by Donnelly and its first three-pointer of the game by Candice Allen to claim the 65-60 victory.

The Aztecs shot just over 35 percent from the field, including 1-for-15 from beyond the arc, and struggled at the line, making 13 of their 23 shots.

Team Concept had three players finish in double-figure scoring, including Allen, who tallied a game-high 20 points.

The Aztecs have one more exhibition game to play on Saturday against the Arizona Venom at Cox Arena, beginning at 4 p.m.
