Chelsea Hopkins Grabs Sixth Career MW Weekly Honor
Feb. 11, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the fourth time this season, San Diego State's Chelsea Hopkins (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been named Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. With her award, the Aztec senior received the sixth MW weekly honor of her career, becoming the first SDSU player to earn the distinction outright on four occasions in the same year since the conference's inception in 1999.
Hopkins played a key role in the Aztecs' two impressive road victories last week at Boise State and Fresno State after averaging 15.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 3.5 steals. The 5-8 point guard shot a sparkling 65 percent from the floor on 13 of 20 field-goal attempts, including a 3-for-6 clip from 3-point range in 64 minutes of action.
Against Boise State last Wednesday, Hopkins scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out seven assists and tied her career high with five steals, as SDSU rolled to a 64-40 win. With the score tied at 12-12, she sparked a timely 17-9 run to close the half, totaling six points, three assists, two rebounds, two steals and a block to help put the Aztecs in front for good.
Then in the highly anticipated rematch with Fresno State on Saturday, Hopkins logged her ninth double-double of the season and 14th of her career with 17 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds, while handing out seven assists and adding two steals. She sank 7 of 10 shots, burying two 3-pointers during a 14-4 run to start the game, as the Aztecs took over sole possession of first place in the MW standings with their eighth straight victory, 74-49.
Hopkins, who also was tabbed MW Player of the Week by College Sports Madness for the fourth time this year on Monday, leads the MW in conference play with an average of 7.1 assists and 3.0 steals per game. She also tops the league with 7.1 defensive rebounds per outing and ranks fourth in scoring with 16.3 points per game.
In addition, Hopkins' recognition marks the sixth MW weekly honor for SDSU this season after fellow classmate Courtney Clements earned the same accolade in consecutive week Nov. 26 and Dec. 3.
The Aztecs (17-5, 8-1 MW), who are receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches polls, return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 13, when they play host to Colorado State at Viejas Arena, beginning at 7 p.m. PT.
