SAN DIEGO - San Diego State University and Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl will play host to the 2009 NCAA Women's Basketball First & Second Rounds, the NCAA announced Tuesday. SDSU was one of eight additional venues selected for 2009 by the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee, which voted last summer to expand from eight to 16 first- and second-round sites, beginning next year.

"San Diego State has a reputation as a great host," said Aztec Director of Athletics Jeff Schemmel. "To bring the women's basketball championship to San Diego and San Diego State is exciting for all of us. More importantly, this shows how far our program has come in just a few years. It says a lot about what (coach) Beth Burns has brought to this program and how excited everyone is about it, especially to be recognized nationally as an up-and-coming program."

The championships will take place either March 21 and 23 or March 22 and 24, 2009, and will each feature four schools vying to advance to the NCAA regionals.

"It's a banner day - not only for our basketball program and our university - but really for West Coast basketball," said Aztec women's basketball head coach Beth Burns said. "It's very exciting considering where we came from two years ago to even put us in this stratosphere where we have an opportunity to play host to the most prestigious tournament that there is in our game.

Cox Arena has served as the host site for three other NCAA championship events, including the 2001 and 2006 Men's Basketball First & Second Rounds and the 2001 Women's Volleyball Final Four, since the facility opened in the fall of 1997.

"The first credit goes to Cox Arena," Burns said. "They do such a fantastic job running any and all events. Their track record on how well they ran the men's tournament no doubt influenced the committee. We are also appreciative to Dr. Stephen Weber and Jeff Schemmel. They made this happen and supported this event. It's on us to continue to elevate the level of our team and the visibility of our program which will only attract more fans and more people to what we feel is the best arena in the country - Cox Arena."

SDSU has played host to NCAA women's basketball games three times previously in Peterson Gym in 1984, 1994 and most recently in 1995.

Ticket information for the 2009 NCAA Division I First and Second Rounds at Cox Arena will be released at a later date.
