#AztecWBB Topples Utah State, 88-72

Powered by the trio of sophomore Deajanae Scurry, senior Cierra Warren and freshman Ariell Bostick the San Diego State women's basketball team won its second straight game on Saturday with an impressive 88-72 victory over Utah State in a Mountain West battle at Viejas Arena.

Despite competing with just seven players for the second straight outing, the Aztecs (9-13, 6-6- MW) rallied for a 77-66 victory at Air Force last Saturday, engineering an 18-5 run over the final 5:26 to snap a two-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Aggies (10-14, 4-9 MW) dropped their fourth in row after falling at UNLV, 82-80.

Against the Falcons, SDSU was led by senior Cierra Warren, who tossed in 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while fellow classmate Danesha Long recorded her first collegiate double-double with a career-high tying 18 points and a personal-best 11 rebounds. The Aztec cause was also aided by juniors Khristina Hunter (14 points, 8 rebounds) and Desi Culberson (10 points, 3 assists), while sophomore Deidra Smith (9 points, 11 rebounds) just missed out on her first career double-double.

Warren tops the MW in overall field-goal percentage (.567) and ranks fifth in scoring (14.8 ppg), eighth in rebounds (6.4/gm) and ninth in blocked shots (1.0/gm). The SDSU center owns the top single-game performance in the league this season with 14 FGs at Sacramento State and has eclipsed the 20 point-barrier on seven occasions. In addition, Hunter finds herself among the league leaders, occupying the sixth spot in field-goal percentage (.478) and the ninth position in rebounds (6.4/gm).

As a team, SDSU tops the MW in both rebounding margin (+6.3) and rebounding defense (33.9/gm). Elsewhere, the Aztecs are third in the league for all games with a .422 field-goal percentage and rank sixth in scoring defense (69.5 ppg), field-goal percentage defense (.414) and steals (7.7/gm).

SDSU will be looking to sweep the regular-season series from USU after posting an 88-72 triumph in San Diego on Jan. 25. The Aztecs have captured all four meetings against the Aggies, including a 96-63 victory in December of 1982, when the Scarlet and Black ventured to Logan for the only time in its history prior to this year.

Following Wednesday's clash San Diego State will return to Viejas Arena on Saturday, Feb. 22, when it squares off against New Mexico for the first time this season. Game time is set for 2 p.m. PT.
