W. Hoops' McKynzie Fort Named All-Mountain West Honoree
March 6, 2017
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
San Diego State women’s basketball junior guard McKynzie Fort earned an All-Mountain West accolade for the third consecutive season, the conference office announced Monday.
This is the fourth all-conference honor of her career after capturing all-freshman honors and, last year, picking up nods on the All-MW and all-defensive teams.
Fort becomes just the fourth Aztec to garner a spot on an All-Mountain West team each of her first three seasons on Montezuma Mesa, joining Paris Johnson, Jené Morris and Courtney Clements. That trio holds the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots respectively on the all-time San Diego State scoring list.
This season, Fort is averaging 15.9 points per game to rank second in the Mountain West, helped by her best offensive performance in the Scarlet and Black with 29 points each at San José State and Cal State Fullerton. She currently ranks 13th in conference play with 2.8 assists per game. One of the Aztecs’ most reliable performers, she leads the squad with 31.8 minutes per game, the 12th-most in the conference, and has already surpassed her career high with eight long balls.
The Fontana, Calif., native got to 1,000 career points at San José State on Jan. 11, becoming just the 21st member of the Aztecs' 1,000-point club and the eighth Aztec to reach that mark in her third season. Fort is the 27th Mountain West student-athlete to hit 1,000 points in her third season and is the first true Mountain West junior accomplish the feat since Wyoming had two student-athletes make the milestone during the 2013-14 season.
SDSU opens the 2017 Mountain West Women's Basketball Championship as the No. 9 seed today at 2 p.m. PT when it faces No. 8 seed San José State. All 10 games of the tournament will stream live on the Mountain West Network, and Chris Ello will call SDSU's games in a live audio broadcast on GoAztecs.com and ESPN 1700.
