Aztec Basketball Faces Stanford Monday In NCAA Second-Round Match Up
The San Diego State women's basketball team won its first NCAA tournament game in 15 years Saturday with a 76-70 victory over DePaul to advance to the second round Monday evening against the No. 2 seeded Stanford Cardinal at 6:30 p.m. PT at Cox Arena.

The Aztecs will look for their first-ever NCAA second-round victory, as a spot in the Sweet 16 and a trip to next weekend's Berkeley Regional is at stake.

On Saturday, the Aztecs got 35 points from junior Jené Morris (San Francisco, Calif.) to win an NCAA game for the first time since 1994, downing a talented DePaul squad, 76-70, in front of the second-largest crowd in Cox Arena women's basketball history.

SDSU will take on a Stanford team that has won each of its last 17 outings and is currently ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Cardinal is 30-4 overall and played in the national title game in 2008, advancing to Monday's outing with a 74-39 rout of UC Santa Barbara.

San Diego State is playing in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1997, and is one of two Mountain West Conference teams to win its first round game. Utah defeated Villanova on Sunday to give the MWC a 2-0 record vs. the Big East Conference.

The Aztecs' last trip to the postseason came in head coach Beth Burns' first stint on Montezuma Mesa, as she directed the team to NCAA tournament appearances in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1997. SDSU has also played in the NCAAs in 1984 and 1985, when it advanced to the regional semifinals.

San Diego State currently stands at 24-7 overall, needing just one more win to tie for the second-most victories in the program's 33 seasons. The Aztecs will also put their unbeaten record at home on the line on Saturday, as SDSU is 15-0 at Cox Arena in 2008-09 and has won 17 straight overall.

Monday's game will be televised live on ESPN2, while Chris Ello will have the live audio call on Xtra Sports 1360. Live stats for all contests are also available on goaztecs.com.
