Former Aztec Chelsea Hopkins Signs with WNBA's Silver Stars

SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State star point guard Chelsea Hopkins has signed a contract for the remainder of the season with the San Antonio Silver Stars of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), the club announced Wednesday.
A two-year starter with the Aztecs after transferring from Duke University, Hopkins was named the 2013 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and received honorable mention All-America recognition from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), leading SDSU to a program-best 27-7 record last year and its second straight regular-season league title.
Hopkins, who topped the nation with four triple-doubles and finished seventh in assists during the 2012-13 campaign, also set an Aztec single-season record with 232 assists and completed her Aztec career with 442 helpers, which ranks fourth in school history.
The Silver Stars, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Dan Hughes, are currently fifth in the WNBA's West Conference with a record of 11-19.
With her signing, Hopkins becomes the third SDSU player to earn a WNBA roster spot after Jené Morris and Courtney Clements. Morris was drafted with the 11th overall selection by the Indiana Fever in 2010 and appeared in 25 games for the club that season, followed by a one-year stint with the Tulsa Shock in 2012.
Meanwhile, Hopkins' backcourt mate Clements signed with the Atlanta Dream as a free agent last May and has appeared in 22 games so far this year, averaging 2.5 points in 9.3 minutes per outing.
San Diego State opens its 2013-14 campaign on Tuesday, Nov. 5, with an exhibition game against Cal State San Marcos at Viejas Arena, starting at 6 p.m. PT.
