SAN DIEGO - San Diego State head basketball coach Beth Burns announced Thursday the selection of sophomore guard Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) and senior forward Shanna Demus (Palmdale, Calif.) as team captains for the upcoming 2007-08 season.

"We are pleased to announce that Shanna Demus and Quenese Davis will be our Aztec basketball captains for the 2007-08 season," Burns said. "Shanna is being named team captain for the second consecutive year and did an excellent job leading a very young and inexperienced squad to its most successful season in recent history. Quenese, although just a sophomore, has more than earned the respect of her teammates and coaches. She gained valuable experience and made fantastic improvement throughout last season. Both of these student-athletes are committed to winning, and we are counting on them to set a championship tone for our team every day."

Davis led the Mountain West Conference and ranked first nationally among freshmen in assists with 5.32 per outing in her first campaign on Montezuma Mesa. The Aztecs' team MVP also was fourth in the league in steals per game (1.96), while scoring in double figures on 17 occasions en route to third-team all-conference honors. Davis played in all 28 of the team's games and tallied the most assists (149) by an Aztec in seven years.

Demus was an MWC honorable mention pick a year ago, leading the squad in steals (60) and offensive rebounds (51), while ranking second in assists (60) and 3-pointers (21). She averaged a career-high 8.5 points per game and was third in the league in steals with a 2.14 per game average.

One of the league's top defensive players, Demus also excelled in the classroom, earning the athletic department's Academic Initiative Medal (A.I.M.), presented to a student-athlete who demonstrates a persistent commitment to her academic goals. She has already earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice and is currently taking graduate classes in postsecondary leadership at SDSU.

The Aztec basketball team officially begins practice on Saturday, Oct. 13. San Diego State's plays one home exhibition game on Nov. 8, before kicking off the season at Nevada on Nov. 11.
