SDSU Women's Basketball Picked To Finish Eighth In MWC

SALT LAKE CITY - The San Diego State women's basketball team has been predicted to finish eighth in the Mountain West Conference in a preseason poll released Thursday at the league's basketball media day in Salt Lake City, Utah. The voting panel consisted of the league's nine head coaches and select media.
The Aztecs, who finished tied for seventh with Air Force in the 2004-05 regular season, earned 45 votes from the panel, 13 more than the Falcons (32) and 45 behind Wyoming (90) for seventh place.
Utah, which tied for the 2004-05 regular season crown with New Mexico, was tabbed as the clear-cut preseason favorite, marking the third time the Utes have been picked to finish atop the conference. Utah received 23-of-26 first-place votes and 214 total points. New Mexico had two first-place votes and finished second with 180 points, followed by MWC newcomer TCU with one first-place vote and 164 points. UNLV (137 pts.) placed fourth, followed by Colorado State (117 pts.), BYU (107 pts.), Wyoming, SDSU and Air Force.
The Aztecs return eight players from last season's squad, including 2004-05 honorable mention all-MWC senior Michelle Strawberry, and welcome back head coach Beth Burns. Burns, who coached SDSU from 1989 to 1997 and led the Aztecs to four NCAA tournament bids, has compiled a 151-83 overall record and a program-best 64.5 winning percentage.
SDSU, which also boasts eight newcomers, officially begins practice on Oct. 15 and starts exhibition play Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. against Team Concept at Cox Arena.
