SDSU Basketball Opens 2006-07 With Midnight Madness

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's and women's basketball teams tipped-off the 2006-07 season by playing host to Midnight Madness, Friday, Oct.13, inside Peterson Gym. Both squads opened the first official day of practice in front of a spirited Aztec crowd.
Following 2-Ball, the men's team took the court for the slam dunk contest. After the first round, Lorrenzo Wade, Brett Hoerner, and Jerome Habel advanced to the finals with scores of 43, 44, and 50, respectively. In the final round, Wade and Habel each registered perfect scores of 50 leading to a tiebreaker in which Wade came out on top.
After the dunk contest, the women's team took the court for a 15-minute scrimmage. LaSandra Dixon scored a game-high five points in leading the Red squad to victory and was one of nine Aztecs to record at least one bucket.
The evening concluded with the men facing each other in a scrimmage that featured four Aztecs in double digits. Wade led all-scorers with 11 points while Pastorek scored 10 in helping the Black squad defeat the Red team, 37-35. Newcomers Jer'Vaughn Johnson and Jerome Habel each scored 10 points apiece in defeat for the Red team.
The San Diego State men's and women's teams will resume practice Saturday in preparation for their respective season openers. The men open their season at the Shamrock Invitational in Moraga, Calif., with a contest against Murray State, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. Meanwhile, the women get their season underway at home vs. Nevada, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m.
