Women's Hoops To Face UCLA In Season Opener

The Aztecs will travel to Los Angeles to face UCLA in the season opener.

San Diego State opens the 37th year of Aztec women's basketball on Saturday when they travel to Los Angeles to take on the UCLA Bruins at 7 p.m. PT.

The Aztecs are opening the season on the road for only the third time in the last six seasons. The last time San Diego State began a campaign on the road was in 2009-10 when it defeated UC Irvine, 64-42.

Beth Burns is starting the 21st season of her head coaching career and 16th overall at the helm of the Aztecs. Burns is in her eighth season of her second stint on The Mesa.

SDSU is receiving votes in both top-25 preseason polls, taking 48 in the AP poll and three in the USA Today Coaches poll.

SDSU has been picked to repeat as Mountain West champions in 2012-13. The Aztecs received 22 of 24 first-place votes and earned 198 points to claim the top spot in the preseason poll.

San Diego State returns 10 players from last season including reigning conference player of the year, Courtney Clements. Clements was selected as this year's preseason MW player of the year. Also returning for the Aztecs for her final season is Chelsea Hopkins. Hopkins was named to the preseason all-league squad after earning the MW Newcomer of the the Year, MW first-team accolades and MW tournament MVP last year. Redshirt freshman Deajanae Scurry was tabbed the MW preseason freshman of the year.

SDSU has five players on its current roster who did not play in a game a year ago. Deajanae Scurry used her redshirt season last year. Danesha Long will see her first action as an Aztec after transferring from Midland College. Deidra Smith and Cierra Warren will redshirt in 2012-13.
