Aztecs Win Four Races At NorCal/SoCal Challenge

The Aztecs won four of seven races on day one of the Norcal/SoCal Challenge on Saturday.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - San Diego State completed the opening day of the NorCal/SoCal Challenge with three wins against UC Davis plus a victory over Loyola Marymount in races held at the Redwood Shores Lagoon in Redwood City. In the seven races in which they competed, Aztec entries crossed the finish line first on four occasions.

The Aztecs' Varsity 4 boat won captured first in its races against both UC Davis and LMU. In the morning, it defeated UC Davis by over 40 seconds, and then came back in the afternoon to record a 30-second victory against Loyola Marymount. The SDSU boat was crewed by the team of Emily Mauer (coxswain), Cassie Wilson (four), Elizabeth West (three), Rae Backens (two) and Samantha Flores (one).

The SDSU Varsity 8 boat Jennifer Miller (coxswain), Sarah Gannon (stroke), Chelsee Brewster (seven), Kate Raymond (six), Emily Walton (five), Vivianna Smith (four), Marissa Shaw (three), Sophie Poser (two) and Romaine Desclos (bow) had a pair of close races. In the morning it lost to UC Davis by less than two seconds as it finished eight seconds closer to the Aggies that their previous meeting this season. The afternoon race against Loyola Marymount saw the Lions claim a victory by just under six seconds.

The Aztecs Second Varsity 8 entry put together a solid effort in registering a six-second win over UC Davis during the morning's competition. Later in the day, the Aztec finished second in their race against Loyola Marymount as they were edged by just over one second. Aztec competitors in their Second Varsity 8 boat included Courtney Siemsen (coxswain), Alex Kudlicki (stroke), Chandler Cole (seven), Lindsay Miller (six), Peggy Tio (five), Darian Kimball (four), Kaitlyn Goss (three), Alex Accornero (two) and Erica Orgon (bow).

San Diego State's Novice Eight boat made its only appearance of the weekend in a race against UC Davis in the morning. The Aztecs' Novice 8 crew included Anna Nelson (Coxswain), Sarah Hultin (stroke), Brittany Harris (seven), Veronica McLean (six), Tara Kistler (five), Tiana Fohne (four), Leah Peterson (three), Kayli Wagner (two) and Sarah Winfield (bow). That group defeated the Aggie entry by almost 16 seconds.

SDSU will complete action at the NorCal-SoCal Challenge on Sunday with a trio of races against St. Mary's. The Aztecs will compete in three races vs. the Gaels in Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 races with the first (Varsity 8) scheduled to start at 9:40 a.m.
