Crew Wins Two Of Three At NorCal/SoCal Challenge

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - San Diego States' Varsity 4 boat completed a sweep of its three races at the NorCal/SoCal Challenge this weekend as it finished ahead of a pair of St. Mary's boats Sunday morning at the Redwood Shores Lagoon in Redwood City.
The crew of Emily Mauer (coxswain), Cassie Wilson (four), Elizabeth West (three), Rae Backens (two) and Samantha Flores (one) finished ahead of the St. Mary's entries by 15 and 39 seconds to complete their sweep of the Gales, UC Davis and Loyola Marymount over the weekend.
The Second Varsity 8 also completed a successful weekend as it beat out the Gael's entry by 1.5 second to record its second win in its three races over the weekend. Their lone loss came at the hands of Loyola Marymount on Saturday by just 1.1 seconds. Aztec competitors in their Second Varsity 8 boat included Courtney Siemsen (coxswain), Alex Kudlicki (stroke), Chandler Cole (seven), Lindsay Miller (six), Peggy Tio (five), Darian Kimball (four), Kaitlyn Goss (three), Alex Accornero (two) and Erica Orgon (bow).
SDSU's Varsity 8 boat fell nine seconds shy of beating out St. Mary's in their race Sunday morning. That Aztec boat consisted of Jennifer Miller (coxswain), Sarah Gannon (stroke), Chelsee Brewster (seven), Kate Raymond (six), Emily Walton (five), Vivianna Smith (four), Marissa Shaw (three), Sophie Poser (two) and Romaine Desclos (bow).
"The Varsity 4 had a very successful weekend winning all of their races," commented Head Coach Jennifer Lewis. "I feel they are in a strong position going into Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association WIRA) Championships in two weeks. The Second Varsity 8 had three solid races this weekend as well. I'm proud of their progress this season and look forward to helping them gain speed over the next couple weeks."
San Diego State will next be in action at the WIRA Championships scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29, on Lake Natoma in God River, Calif.
