Rowing Finishes First Day at WIRA Championships

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team wrapped the first day of competition at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Associate (WIRA) Championship regatta on Saturday. SDSU's best finish came in the novice four race in which the Aztecs took second place.
The morning's competition got underway for San Diego State at 9:20 am with the women's novice four showdown. The Aztecs finished in second place with a time of 8 minutes, 15.3 seconds. Long Beach State took the top spot (8:06.8) of the race.
The next event for SDSU came at 9:50 am in the first heat of the second varsity eight contest. That event would see the Aztecs finish with a time of 7:28.9, just behind Loyola Marymount (7:20.8). The second heat of the same event produced a better time for the SDSU `A' boat (7:11.27) which was second only behind Portland (7:07.17).
The varsity eight race got underway at 10:40 for San Diego State. The Aztecs posted a time of 7:08.9 in that event.
SDSU will return to the waters of Lake Natoma on Sunday for the second and final day of competition at the WIRA regatta.
