Crew Team Finishes Fifth At Annual WIRA Championships

The Aztecs placed fifth in the final team standings at the 2012 WIRA Championships.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - San Diego State rowing team concluded competition at the annual Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships Sunday morning on Lake Natoma near Sacramento. The Aztecs rowed in three Grand Finals and one Petite Final as they finished fifth (of 30 teams) in the final team standings.

In the Varsity 4 final, San Diego State placed fourth (8:03.7) in a race won by Gonzaga in a time of 7:25.2. The Aztecs also finished behind Sacramento State (7:40.8) and St. Mary's (7:57.0), but ahead of Loyola Marymount (8:30.8) in the five-boat event. The SDSU entry was rowed by Courtney Siemsen (coxswain), Cassie Wilson (stroke), Elizabeth West (three), Rae Backens (two) and Samantha Flores (bow).

The Second (Junior) Varsity 8 final also saw the Aztecs claim fourth place as the crew of Jennifer Miller (coxswain), Alex Kudlicki (stroke), Chandler Coles (seven), Lindsay Miller (six), Peggy Tio (five), Darian Kimball (four), Emily Walton (three), Alex Accornero (two) and Erica Orgon (bow) crossed the finish line in 7:11.7. The SDSU boat was just over two second behind third-place Loyola Marymount (7:09.1) in an event won by Gonzaga (6:47.8)

In the final for the Novice 8 boats, San Diego State placed sixth in a race in which the fourth through sixth spots were separated by a total of six seconds. The entry from Gonzaga claimed the gold with a mark of 7:07.3 while SDSU finished with a time of 7:26.6 behind fourth-place San Diego (7:20.6) and UC Santa Barbara (7:23.7). The SDSU entry in the division consisted of Emily Mauer (coxswain), Sarah Hultin (stroke), Brittany Harris (seven), Veronica McLean (six), Tara Kistler (five), Tiana Fohne (four), Leah Peterson (three), Kayli Wagner (two) and Sarah Winfield (bow).

In the Petite Final for the Varsity 8 division won a head-to-head race against Santa Clara with a time of 7:00.4, a mark that was some 26 second faster than the Bronco entry. The Aztec Varsity 8 boat was rowed by Emma Peck (coxswain), Sarah Gannon (stroke), Chelsee Brewster (seven), Kate Raymond (six), Romaine Desclos (five), Vivianna Smith (four), Marissa Shaw (three), Sophie Poser (two) and Kaitlyn Goss (bow).

Gonzaga claimed the team title of the 2012 WIRA Championships with a score of 344. San Diego State's total of 293 points was good for fifth place, just three behind fourth-place Western Washington (296).

The Aztecs' next regatta comes in two weeks when they will travel to Philadelphia for the annual Dad Vail Regatta to be contested on the Schuykill River during the weekend of May 11-12.
