Rowing Takes Second and Third at SD Fall Classic
Nov. 10, 2013
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team competed in the San Diego Fall Classic hosted by the San Diego Rowing Club on Sunday. The Aztecs entered six total boats at the event and finished in the top three in two different races. The outing marked SDSU's final competition of the fall.
The first showing for San Diego State came in the Women's Open Eight event in which five Aztec crews raced against boats from San Diego, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. The Toreros' "A" crew took first place in the contest with a time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds, followed closely behind by their own "B" boat. SDSU was right behind and took third with a time of 17:16. San Diego State had four other boats finish in the race. The Aztecs' "B" crew clocked in at 17:36 followed by the "C" boat at 18:23, the "D" crew (18:47) and the "E" boat at 19:17.
The team saw their best showing on the day come in the Women's Open Novice Eight race. SDSU finished second in the race (18:30), almost a full minute ahead of the next finisher. The San Diego "A" crew would finish just ahead of the Aztecs to take the title (18:01).
"We were very pleased with the way the team raced," said first-year head coach Bill Zack. "(The team) rowed as fast as they were capable of today and showed that the many changes that have been implemented in the program are working. Today's results will keep the team excited about training hard until the next competition, which is not until February. The team's parents did a fantastic job of cheering on the Aztecs and providing a great brunch after the race. I would also like to thank the San Diego Rowing Club for putting on a great regatta."
San Diego State will next take to the water in the spring when it will scrimmage against local schools followed by the team's first dual race against UCLA on March 8.
