Crew To Compete At Annual WIRA Championships

The Aztecs will have boats in five divisions at this weekend's WIRA Championships.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team will be in northern California this weekend to take part in the annual Western Intercollegiate Rowing association (WIRA) Championships at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma. The Aztecs will have boats entered in five categories as they compete against other Division I schools in the western United States in races on Saturday and Sunday (April 28-29).

Saturday's racing will consist of 36 races (19 on the women's side, 17 on the men's side) beginning at 8:00 a.m. and continuing until approximately 4:10 p.m.

Sunday's competition, which includes the grand finals for nearly every event, consists of 23 races (13 on the women's side, 10 on the men's side) beginning at 8 a.m. and running until 12:00 p.m. The awards ceremony will take place at approximately 12:30 p.m.

SDSU's first race will be in Heat 1 of the Novice 4 scheduled for an 8:40 a.m. start Saturday morning. SDSU will row against Puget Sound, Willamette, Long Beach State, UC San Diego, Southern Methodist and Western Washington. If the Aztecs emerge as one of the top three finishers from their heat, they will advance to Sunday's Grand Final at 8:20 a.m. If they finish fourth through sixth they will row in the Petite Final that gets underway at 2:40 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

In the Varsity 8, the Aztecs' heat at 10:30 a.m. will also include St. Mary's, Gonzaga and UC Davis. A Top three finish will send SDSU to Sunday's Final at noon. A fourth place will have the Aztecs in the Petite Final at 11:20 Sunday morning.

San Diego State's Novice 8 boat will race against Sacramento State, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, Sonoma State and University of San Diego in a heat that scheduled to start at 11:40 a.m. Sat:20 p.m. will feature the fourth through sixth place finishers in each heat.

In the two divisions that will not have heats on Saturday, San Diego State will be competing in the final on Sunday in both the Varsity 4 (8:10 a.m.) and Second (Junior) Varsity 8 (10:50 a.m.).
