The San Diego State women's crew team continues the fall portion of its schedule Sunday at the San Diego Fall Classic Regatta. The event will be held at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center and is hosted by the San Diego Rowing Club. The Aztecs' varsity eight squad comes off a fourth-place finish in a 20-boat field at the Head of American Regatta in Rancho Cordova this past weekend in a race held in storm conditions.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Races start Saturday at 8 a.m. with the novice eight followed by the women's open fours event at 9:10 a.m. The collegiate eights start at 9:40 a.m. The races are best viewed from the east end of El Carmel Point in Mission Beach. The trophy and awards presentation will be held at the San Diego Rowing Club.
Approximately 15 teams are expected to compete in this weekend's event including local schools USD and UC San Diego. Also on the list is Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine, Orange Coast College and Chapman.
AT LAST YEAR'S REGATTA
The Aztecs capped off last year's event with a first-place finish. SDSU finished one, two and three in the women's varsity eight event. The varsity 'A' boat won the event with a new collegiate course record of 19:51. They were followed by the 'B' squad who finished just seconds behind with a 20:06 time in the 3.6 mile course. The varsity 'C' team completed the sweep with a time of 21:04 good for third place. The novice eight also took first place out of a field of 17 crews, racing to a final time of 23 minutes.
DIRECTIONS TO THE EVENT
Coming I-5 South - Exit the Balboa/Garnet off-ramp. Turn right on Garnet (third stoplight). Follow Garnet or Grand Ave. to Mission Blvd. Turn left and go south on Mission Blvd. Turn left and go east on Santa Clara Place. Follow Santa Clara to Santa Clara Point and stay to the right until you reach the Mission Bay Aquatic Center - 1001 Santa Clara Point.
Coming I-5 North or I-8 West - Take I-5 north to I-8 west. Follow I-8 west and take the Sports Arena/West Mission Day Drive off-ramp. Turn right and follow the signs to West Mission Bay Drive. Follow West Mission Bay Drive to Mission Blvd. (Belmont Park Rollercoaster). Turn right and go north on Mission Blvd. to Santa Clara Place. Turn right and go east on Santa Clara Place. Follow Santa Clara Place to Santa Clara Point and stay to the right until you reach the Mission Bay Aquatic Center -1001 Santa Clara Point.
Next weekend the squad will compete at separate events. The varsity eight will travel to Seattle for the Head of the Lake Regatta on Lake Washington while the rest of the team will be in Newport for the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival.
