Feb. 24, 2009
SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State women's golf team logged its highest finish of the season with a fifth-place performance at the 54-hole Fresno State Lexus Classic with a 38-over 902, including a 301 in the final 18 holes, Tuesday at the par-72, 6,072-yard Copper River Golf Course in Fresno, Calif. The Aztecs, who had never ended up better than 15th place in three previous Fresno State tournaments, were just three strokes out of fourth place and trailed team champion, No. 21 UC Irvine, by only 11 strokes.
SDSU got a solid performance from all five golfers in the second of two days of competition in Fresno. All five logged sub-80 rounds and also either improved or maintained their spot on the final individual leaderboard.
Aztec freshman Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) posted her fourth top-10 individual finish and her third in a row with a 4-over 220, including a final round 73, to move from 10th to eighth place. Enarsson had 13 pars, two birdies and only one bogey over the final 18 holes.
Junior Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.) put together her best round of the event with a 2-over 74 to move her up seven spots in the final standings into a tie for 13th with a 9-over 225. Wilson posted a career-low 54-hole score by three strokes and beat her previous season-best by 11 strokes.
SDSU senior Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) maintained her position on the individual leaderboard with a final round 78, to tie for 29th place with a 232. Classmate Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) bounced back from a second-round 84 to card a 76, making the largest jump of any Aztec golfer, moving from 46th all the way into a tie for 34th place with a 234.
Sophomore Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) rounded out the contingent, tying with Kazarian for 34th place, after a final-round 7-over-79.
Santa Clara's Miki Ueoka, who finished 28th at last week's Aztec Invitational in Chula Vista, held on to her day one lead to grab medalist honors with a three-stroke cushion over second place Kay Hoey of Long Beach State at 7-under 209.
San Diego State will continue north next week for the 16-team Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at Almaden Country Club in San Jose, Calif., March 1-2.
