Spiranac Tied for Second after Day One at Cal Classic
Feb. 25, 2013
PLEASANTON, Calif - San Diego State's Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.) fired a 1-under par 71 on Monday to lead the Aztec women's golf team during the opening round of the inaugural Cal Classic in Pleasanton, Calif. With her performance, the SDSU sophomore transfer finds herself in a three-way tie for second place on the individual leaderboard at the par-72, 6,304-yard Ruby Hill Golf Course.
As a team, the Aztecs occupy the fourth position out of 11 schools after shooting a combined 12-over 300 through 18 holes, just two strokes behind both second-place Stanford (+10) and UC Davis (+10) and four shots in back of front-runner Arizona State (+8).
Individually, Spiranac completed her lowest round after joining the Scarlet and Black this spring, offsetting a bogey with birdies on a pair of par-4s, the No. 5 and No. 15 holes, to tie for the second spot along with Arizona State's Laura Blanco (-1) and Demi Runas of UC Davis (-1), while Noemi Jimenez, another ASU golfer, is perched atop the leaderboard after carding a 4-under 68.
In addition to Spiranac's score, the Aztecs received a 1-over 73 performance from junior Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.), who overcame six bogeys with a team-best five birdies on the day to forge a three-way tie for seventh, while freshman Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) rebounded from a shaky start to shoot even-par on the back nine Monday, finishing at 5-over 77 to tie for 27th.
Elsewhere, senior Christine Wong (Richmond, British Columbia) finds herself in a six-way tie for 37th after firing a 7-over 79, while junior Maureen Dunnagan (Lexington, S.C.) experienced difficultly in her opening round, tying for 59th at 18-over 90.
The Cal Classic concludes on Tuesday with final round action, starting at 8:30 a.m. PT. SDSU will be paired with Coastal Carolina and California on holes No. 5-9.
