Henrikson Tied for Lead After Day One at The Farms
March 24, 2014
RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - San Diego State women's golfer Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) finds herself in a three-way atop the individual leaderboard after firing a 4-under par 68 on Monday during the first round of the SDSU Farms Invitational at The Farms Golf Club.
As a team, the Aztecs occupy the third spot out of 17 squads with a combined score of 4-over 292 through 18 holes, just two strokes in back of second-place Stanford (+2) and seven shots behind front-runner UCLA (-3) on the par-72, 6,237-yard course layout.
Henrikson enjoyed a prolific start, draining one of her six birdies on the par-4, 366-yard No. 1 hole to offset two bogeys for the round. With her effort, the SDSU sophomore notched her collegiate-best score and shares the lead with Miami's Kailey Walsh and Alison Lee of UCLA heading into Tuesday's second round.
Meanwhile, Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.) sits five shots in back of Henrikson in a nine-way tie for 11th place at 1-over 73 after the first round. Despite a birdie at No. 7, the Aztec junior was 2-over following consecutive bogeys on Nos. 10-11 before closing strong with five straight pars and a birdie on the par-5, 474-yard 18th.
The remainder of the SDSU starting five finished within two strokes of one another, including Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), who landed in a tie for 28th at 3-over 75. The Aztec freshman was hampered by a slow start with three bogeys on her first seven holes before reeling off six straight pars. Blair's progress was slowed, however, after she carded two additional bogeys sandwiched around a birdie at No. 15.
In addition, Maria Fernanda Villegas (Ensenada, Mexico) remains in a tie for 35th one shot in back of Blair after firing an opening-round 76. The SDSU freshman sank three birdies on the day, including a pair on the first and 18th holes, but was able to find consistency in between, suffering double-bogeys at No. 7 and No. 9, along with three additional bogeys on the back nine.
Elsewhere, Kristina Lynn (Carlsbad, Calif.) finds herself in a tie for the 40th position after shooting a 77 on Monday in her first start of the season for the Scarlet and Black. The Aztec junior was even on the back nine after overcoming two early bogeys with birdies at No. 6 and No. 13, but an untimely triple-bogey on the next hole, the par-3 14th, derailed her momentum.
SDSU was also represented by a pair of individual competitors as junior Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) logged a 79 to end the day in a tie for 55th, while senior Maureen Dunnagan landed in the 83rd position following an opening-round 84.
The Aztecs resume play at the SDSU Farms Invitational with second-round action on Tuesday, joining UCLA and Stanford for a 9:39 a.m. tee time, starting on hole No. 1.
