San Diego State sophomore Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) is in fifth place after carding a first-round 74 Thursday at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships in Seaside, Calif. As a team, the No. 45 Aztecs are also in fifth place at 23-over 311, but are only one stroke behind fourth-place and No. 22 TCU, three in back of No. 37 UNLV and trail Colorado State by five.

"We struggled a little with the course today, but I feel like we got more comfortable on the back nine," Aztec head coach Emilee Klein said. "We are very close to playing great and we'll be ready to improve (in the standings) over the next two days."

Enarsson is the only SDSU player in the top 10, as she had two birdies and tied for the tournament lead with 12 pars in the first 18 holes. The reigning MWC Freshman of the Year was 10th overall at the 2009 conference tournament, when she also carded a first-round 74.

Aztec freshman Gina Clark (Palm Desert, Calif.) and junior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) are tied for 15th place at 6-over 78, while junior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) is 25th with an opening-round 81.

San Diego State freshman Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.), who led the team in six of nine previous events in 2009-10, was unable to find any consistency in her MWC championship debut. Wong was at 8-over through the first nine holes, before carding her lone birdie on the par-5 12th hole and ending up with an 11-over 83.

The 21st-ranked New Mexico Lobos, who have won each of the last two league titles and six overall, own a 12-stroke lead over the rest of the field with a 6-over 294. The Lobos have the top three individuals with Jodi Ewart and Rebecca Hellbom tying for first place at 1-under 71 at the par-72, 6,009-yard Black Horse Golf Course.

The 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships continue Friday morning with the second round starting at 8:50 a.m. PT. Live results are available at goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
