Aztec Golfer Malin Enarsson Fifth After First Round Of MWC Championships
April 16, 2009
Playing in her first career Mountain West Conference championship, Aztec freshman golfer Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) is tied for fifth place with a 2-over 74, after the first round Thursday at the par-72, 6,027-yard Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif. As a team, San Diego State is in sixth place, just three strokes out of fifth, after posting a 24-over 312 in the first 18 holes of the three-day, 54-hole event.
Enarsson, who has been the Aztecs' top golfer in every tournament this season, carded a pair of birdies on the eighth and 14 holes, after starting the day with a bogey, par and double-bogey on her opening three holes. Enarsson is tied for fifth place with two-time reigning MWC individual champion, New Mexico's Jodi Ewart, and her teammate Britney Choy, as all three are four strokes off the lead.
Aztec sophomore Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) joined Enarsson in the top 20 with a first-round 6-over 78 to tie for 16th place. She was at even-par through the first nine holes, before recording three consecutive double-bogeys on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes. Arcala battled back, however, notching back-to-back birdies to finish with a team-high five birdies on the day.
Redshirt junior Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) is one stroke behind Arcala in 20th place with a 79, while classmate Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.) had an 81 to tie for 26th. SDSU's lone senior, Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.), struggled the entire day, finishing at 16-over par with 12 bogeys and a pair of double-bogeys.
Wyoming's Jonelle Martinez is the only golfer in the field under-par, firing a first round 70 to hold a two-stroke advantage over UNLV's Therese Koelbaek, who is at even-par 72. New Mexico is atop the team leaderboard by four strokes, posting a 13-over 301.
San Diego State will tee-off with Colorado State at 7:30 a.m. PT Friday for the second round of the 2009 MWC championships. Live stats are available online at golfstat.com.
