Aztec Women's Golf Rallies Behind Enarsson's 68
Sept. 20, 2008
ALBUEQUERQUE, N.M. -
True freshman Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) shot a tournament best 5-under 68 to help the San Diego State women's golf team rally to a 13th-place finish at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs put together their best round of the three-day event carding a 300 over the final 18 holes, their best team score by 14 strokes, to end up at 53-over 529 at the par-73, 6,167-yard University of New Mexico Golf Course.
Enarsson, who was playing in just the third round of her collegiate career, posted seven birdies with all of them coming in her final nine holes. Her 68 was the best by anyone in the 90-player field over the course of the three days, and was particularly amazing given only the day before she fired a 6-over 79, after carding a 4-over 77 to start the tournament.
Enarsson's 68 is the best round by an Aztec since Jenna Wilson had a 67 at the 2003 Lady Aztec Invitational. The 68 helped Enarsson from 49th to 18th place at 5-over 224.
The Aztecs also got a final day boost from junior Ashley Wood (Lake Tahoe, Calif.), who finished at even-par 73, tying her career-low round, with five birdies. Wood previous best score of the week was a 79 on Friday. She ended up in 47th place at 14-over 233 in her first career 54-hole tournament.
Senior Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) led SDSU in each of the first two rounds, but shot an 81 to tie with Wood for 47th place with a 233.
Sophomore Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) matched her second round score with an 80 to tie for 75th, while freshman Casey McIntosh (Rancho Mirage, Calif.) rounded out the Aztec starting five in 81st place.
Host New Mexico posted the tournament's low team round on its home course with a 287 to claim the team title, while Lobo Jodi Ewart was the medalist with a 6-under 213.
San Diego State returns to action Sept. 29-30 at the CU Heather Farr Memorial Invitational in Broomfield, Colo.
